Time to Say Thank You

Volunteer’s Week 2020

Every year, between 1-7 June, Volunteer’s Week takes place across the UK and it is the perfect time for us to recognise the contribution that our volunteers make, here at the Museum of Croydon. Sadly of course, due to the ongoing coronavirus situation, this year will be different and we will not be holding our usual celebrations together. However, we would like to take this opportunity to share our appreciation for all of the time and effort our volunteers have freely given in supporting the Museum of Croydon throughout the year and especially during these challenging last few months.

Some members of the volunteer team have sent us a picture of themselves as they have been able to continue volunteering from home. You can read Gabby, Sylvia and Claudia’s stories and find out how they have coped with life during lockdown.

What is good to know is that during these unprecedented times, we have seen so many people come together and support each other in many different ways. We have also seen that during the lockdown period, people have been trying new things, re-igniting old hobbies, being more creative, baking, painting, learning and that includes members of our volunteer team too. Sylvia Nuthall, who has volunteered with the Museum of Croydon for over 6 years, has agreed to show some of her paintings.

Volunteering is a great way to give back to the community and it is such a good feeling to know that you have made a difference.

We are very proud and grateful to have such a marvellous team of committed volunteers who continuously give their support to the Museum of Croydon so that Croydon’s culture and heritage can be shared by all.

In the last year, our Visitor Services Volunteers engaged with visitors in our exhibitions and galleries. They have helped to run workshops such as the Home Front project and helped to run family themed events throughout the year. Their time has also included cataloguing hundreds of items to help make it easier for people to use and access our collections.

Our Collections Volunteers work closely with the Collections Officer and Borough Archivist. Tasks have included cataloguing special collections, such as W.H. Mills, Deeds and Theatre programmes and also auditing our collection of handling objects.

The Museum of Croydon collects oral histories and we are currently looking for people who would be interested in transcribing these. This is a volunteer role that would be done from the comfort of your own home.
