Celebrations popular in the Arnhem Gallery
Many Croydon families
had connections to the Fairfield Halls.
Janet Sweny followed her sister and cousin
in having her wedding reception here.
Janet’s Gran also worked in catering
at the Fairfield Halls.
Peter and Leni Gillman were married
in Croydon register office on the day
of the opening of the Fairfield Halls,
2 November 1962.
Fifty years later, on 2 November 2016,
they were invited to the Halls’
50th anniversary concert.
The Arnhem Gallery in the Fairfield Halls
was used for exhibitions, banquets, and dances,
but was also popular for wedding receptions
due to its facilities.
The Gallery could seat 500 guests for banquets
and included a reception bar and kitchen.
The Arnhem Gallery was also notable
for its natural top lighting.
The last couple
to have their wedding reception in the Gallery
prior to the closure were chef, Denise
and construction worker, Ian Rees, of Forestdale.
They had their wedding reception in June 2016
with a “Me to You” teddy bear theme.
The Fairfield Halls closed for refurbishment
the following month.
