Nigel Benn vs Graeme Ahmed
On 28 January 1987
1,100 people came to watch
boxing in the Fairfield Halls’ Concert Hall.
Top of the bill was Croydon’s Chris Blake.
That night, a successful
amateur fighter from Ilford, Nigel Benn,
made his professional debut.
Born of parents from Barbados
and an ex-British Army infantryman,
Benn styled himself
as the ‘Dark Destroyer.’
Benn defeated his opponent,
Graeme Ahmed in two rounds
with a technical knockout.
Ahmed later recalled the fight
to The Shields Gazette:
“When I took the fight on
I knew nothing of Benn’s record,
and I had no idea
what he would then go on to achieve.
But when we got into the ring,
Benn was very strong
and his speed of hand was so quick.
I remember I just couldn’t
keep the guy off me. He was so quick.”
Benn went on to a highly successful career.
He held the WBO Middleweight title
and the WBC Super-Middleweight title.
He twice fought Chris Eubank
losing in 1990
and drawing in 1993.
