About the organ
Quantities can be interesting,
there are just under 800
electro-magnets in the organ,
the windings of which amount to
of fine enamelled copper wire,
there are also twenty thousand yards
of normal twenty six gauge
wire in the action;
and there are just under
three thousand pipes in the organ.
The contract amount agreed for the
organ to be built was £20,500.
Up until the closure of the Halls
for refurbishment in July 2016,
tuning of the organ was carried out
by Harrison and Harrison of Durham,
as its organ builders.
who can be heard reciting
some of the Inaugural programme
was the gentleman last responsible
for the organ’s tuning as well as the last
organ recital or ‘Organ Fest’
prior to the closure.
Andrew repeated the repertoire
from the first inaugural organ concert
and gave the audience
a presentation on the organ’s history.
