Choosing to be a lesbian mother
In the early 1970s,
Sara was in a long-term relationship
with a woman.
They wanted children,
but thought that it could not happen.
Starting a family was a bold choice
and Sara faced strong reactions.
During the time
that Sara's son was growing up
the idea of the 'nuclear family',
with a mother, a father and children,
became less dominant.
9% of babies born in Croydon
had unmarried mothers.
Between 1991 and 1994,
it was 33%.
