Vivien Lovett talks about
her grandmother Agnes.
"Walter and Agnes
were the original stallholders
at the top end of Surrey Street&
They lived central, in Church Park
In grandfather's day, 1897,
he had to run for his pitch
along with his contemporaries,
there was no licensing.
This was a free-for-all.
Grandmother stayed guarding ours
at the top end of Surrey Street,
that was the favourite spot for grandfather."
"On one occasion
grandmother used her
heavily loaded handbag
to fight off some of the other traders.
She was a very good salesperson.
Walter was too quiet,
very quiet, very unhurried.
He wouldn't really be seen
in Surrey Street during the day.
Agnes would have seen to the customer,
She put in a lot of time and effort
at the stall."
