A midder bag and forceps used by Dr Barras Todd during home births in Thornton Heath in the 1950s. Although the proportion of home births was declining, 36% of women in Britain still gave birth at home in 1958. Most booked a midwife for their deliveries. Dr Todd was called in if there were any complications. He kept the midder bag, ready packed, at the surgery in London Road. Although he did not use the forceps himself, they were kept in the bag in case of difficult deliveries.
