Alfred's Pickaxe
Alfred Layton was Chairman
of the Norwood District
Tramways Company.

He used this pickaxe
to break the ground for a new tramline
in Selhurst Road in May 1883.

Early trams were single-deckers,
pulled along by one horse.
By 1883, double-decker,
two-horse trams were in use.

Tram rails were introduced
to make it easier for the horses
to pull the heavy weight of the trams.
