Preventing cruelty to animals
The annual parade
was organised by the Croydon branch
of the Royal Society
for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
The RSPCA began in 1824
and it grew rapidly.
By 1900, about 7,000 people a year
were convicted for mistreating animals.
Cruelty to animals was punished,
but good care was rewarded.
Every year at the Croydon Parade
there were cash prizes
for the best kept horses.
Croydon still has an active RSPCA.
