Icon of Saint Peter
An icon of St Peter painted by Father Demetrios Economou in 1976 for the Greek Orthodox Church of St Constantine and St Helen in Upper Norwood. Father Demetrios trained as an artist as well as a priest. He started decorating the church soon after it opened in 1976, painting icons in the Byzantine style. In the early days of Christianity paintings were used to illustrate biblical scenes in churches as many people were unable to read. In more modern times icons are used as an aid to prayer. Father Demetrios recalls "People tell me 'Now I come very often to the church because I feel the presence of the Holy Man next to me, on the wall.' So my satisfaction is that I can offer to the people something more than blessings."
