I Am Here
This sound clip was created during the
I Am Here project. The group of 14-24

I Am Here is part of Stories of the World,
one of the major projects at the heart of the
London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.

Changing the face of Croydon shopping.
When the Whitgift Centre was first imagined,
the idea of a shopping centre was new and
unnamed. Whitgift Centre officially opened
in October 1970. The unsuspecting world had
received something heavenly, the public
were amazed at the extravagant shopping
centre. Locals and tourists just couldn't wait
Whitgift was the largest shopping centre of its
kind, there was so much to buy and people

Whitgift Centre news promised that this new
kind of shopping would be 'a pleasure instead
of a chore', there was something new behind
every door. So it never became a bore.
Whitgift relates to me in many ways but the
beauty of it remains the same. Whitgift Centre
news inspires me because I want to pursue a
career in journalism. This specific object reminds
of the start of my involvement in media, where
I once pondered upon where the journey
might take me."
