S. Porter's Plank
1895 - 1896
Wooden plank used in the building of the Town Hall in 1895 - 1896. One of the builders, S. Porter, has written on it how he felt about Croydon's first mayor, Jabez Balfour. Jabez Balfour used his own building society, The Liberator, to swindle people out of their life savings. On one side of the plank S. Porter has written ""This Town Hall of Croydon is the First Society Job that was ever built in Croydon and let us hope it will not be the last - Amen"". On the other side ""This Bloody Thief J Balfour is now being tried at the Courts in London May 1895. S Porter. And Fuck them all.
