Arthur's Minstrel Bones
Late 1890s
Arthur Knighting owned these 'bones'
which were actually wooden clappers
that he played between his fingers.

Arthur performed songs
with the popular London group,
the Moore and Burgess Minstrels.

Groups like this
would rub their faces with burnt cork
and pretend to be black.
They sang songs that imitated
African American plantation workers.
