Title

Unexploded bomb
Early 1940s
Description

This 500lb bomb fell on the orchard at Heathfield House, Coombe Lane, Addington in 1942. It failed to explode and was defused. The Riesco family, who lived in the house, were delighted when they found they could keep it. 2621 high explosive bombs fell on Croydon during the Second World War, but only 44 of them weighed 500lb or more. Together with landmines, flying bombs, incendiaries and oil bombs, they killed or injured over 5000 people and damaged 60,000 houses.
