Model of Hengist, a Handley Page HP 42 airliner, part of the Imperial Airways fleet. Imperial Airways was based at Croydon Airport and was the principal British government airline from 1924 to 1940. Hengist carried cargo as well as passengers. In December 1934 it took the first batch of airmail sent to Australia, from Croydon to Karachi. At Karachi, the mail was transferred to another plane and eventually arrived in Darwin 11 days after leaving Britain.
