These crutches were issued to Tom Fisher, of Thornton Heath, after he had a horrendous motorcycle accident in 1941. The accident left his right leg nearly two inches shorter than his left. He was told he would never be able to walk again without crutches. However, Tom had once worked as a cobbler and he made himself a raised shoe. In time he was able to walk without even a stick to help him.
