Title

Cane
Description

A cane used infrequently by Paul Sowan, a teacher at Norbury Manor Boys' School from 1963 until the early 1970s. Paul thought that caning children was barbaric. But the headmaster insisted on all his teachers doing so. In the early 1960s, teachers could cane children whenever they thought necessary. By the 1970s, only senior staff were allowed to do so, and finally only the head teacher and deputy. Soon after, corporal punishment in schools was banned.
