Chadder (shawl) worn by Shanaz at her home in New Addington in the early 1990s. Shanaz was given her first chadder when she lived with her father's family in Pakistan. This chadder was given to her by an aunt who came to Britain to visit her in 1991. Young Pakistani women wear chadders around their head and shoulders - this is considered respectful to God in Muslim countries. The chadder is very warm and Shanaz often wore it at home during the winter.
Chaddar of black twill-weave wool/acrylic fabric embroidered with coloured silks in tambour work.
