Petrol rationing coupons used at Lane's Garage in Norwood Road, West Norwood. In 1956 the Egyptian government had nationalised the Suez canal, previously run by an Anglo French company. In response, Britain and France attacked Egypt. The canal was closed, severely restricting supplies of oil from the Gulf. In Britain, car users were limited to the amount of petrol they could use. They had to hand in coupons when buying their allocated ration.
