Title

Old Pennies
Description

1905 and 1907 Pennies. When someone died it was usual for them to be "laid out" at home before the funeral. Mabel Sterling of Thornton Heath would often be called to wash and bandage a body. She would lay pennies on the eyes to keep them closed and bandage the jaw to the top of the head to prevent it gaping.
