Building the Wall
After the Second World War,
the victorious allies
the USA and the Soviet Union)
into four zones of occupation.
In 1949, the country was divided.
The American, French and British zones
become the Federal Republic of Germany;
the Soviet zone in the east
became the communist
German Democratic Republic (GDR).
Berlin was situated in the GDR,
but the western allies
retained control of part of the city.
the East German government built
a wall across Berlin
to stop their inhabitants moving
to the more prosperous West Berlin.
Those attempting to cross
were shot by border guards.
In October 1989,
Berliners broke down the wall.
A year later Germany was reunified.
