Norman tells of his father's accident:
"During that time he had
his horrendous motorbike accident.
while he was on his way to work,
he was riding
his brother's Norton motorcycle.
I was taken to see him
about a week after
and I scarcely recognised him
because his hair
had turned nearly to white.
It resulted in his right leg
being nearly a foot shorter
than his left one.
The knee was completely compressed
and the leg was bent sideways.
He was issued with these crutches
he would never walk without them.
When he was younger
he had worked as a shoemender
and now he took it up again.
He made a raised shoe for himself.
It was very high and very heavy
because of the weight of the leather.
He used to walk without the crutches,
without his stick sometimes.
I call it stubbornness,
but he was
a tremendously independent man."
