John's Cross
1860s
Volunteer firefighters
were called out in emergencies
to help work the pumps.

After each fire,
The Volunteer Fire Brigade
and Board of Health
gave them a token like this.

John Hawkin
was a volunteer fireman
when Croydon's Parish Church burnt down.
He made this cross
from a piece of burnt timber
that was left behind.
