Corps of Stewards vs Lady Programme Sellers
The Corps of Stewards
was set up by Thomas Pyper,
the General Manager,
to assist in the smooth running
of both public and private events
in the Fairfield Halls.
Initially this was a male only role,
made up mainly of retired men.
The uniform included a tie
to identify their role.
New ties were issued
to commemorate significant
such as the 10th and 25th.
Women were able to join
a corps of lady programme sellers,
but in the beginning were not permitted
to be in the main Corps of Stewards.
