Royal Green Jackets Gas Mask
A gas mask and cap badge of the type worn by Evan Virtue of Thornton Heath when he was stationed in Northern Ireland in the 1970s and early 1980s. Evan was a soldier in the 2nd Battalion Royal Green Jackets, an infantry regiment. He served in three tours of Northern Ireland between 1974 and 1982: two in West Belfast, one in South Armagh. His main role was patrolling the streets or countryside. The British government had sent extra troops to Northern Ireland in 1969, to fulfil a peace keeping role between the catholic and protestant communities.
