I Am Here
This sound clip was created during the
I Am Here project. The group of 14-24
year olds selected objects close to their
heart that also said something about identity.
I Am Here is part of Stories of the World,
one of the major projects at the heart of the
London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.
"My name is Kadeem. I'm 18 years old and
I live in Croydon. The reason why chose the
Tram sign, well, I was just amazed about
how Croydon used to have trams then didn't
for a period of time to make way for the
buses and then they do again, like in the
It also identifies me because I live in
Croydon innit, like ever since the tram came
Croydon been like centre of attention because
'Oi! Yo! Look Croydon's got a tram now,
we can try test it out.' So yeah that's why.
I couldn't at first heard that the trams were
going to be like introduced to Croydon,
I was like 'Wow tram our tram service like wow.'
The only time I ever heard of a tram was like
out of the area or in another country, so that to
have it in the place you grew up in, that wow it's
like a whole other turning point.
I mean like I can now go to New Addington
faster instead of taking the 130, well that
was back in the years when the 130 used to
go straight to Addington, New Addington, the
double decker bus, I'm talking about. Instead
of like taking a train to Wimbledon I can now
take a tram to Wimbledon straight there, you
know. I can go Mitcham Junction, Ikea easily,
like that, so, yeah, erm, plus I was excited
about it when I was little, so yeah!"
