Title

Employment Scheme Items
Description

Items given to and produced by Frances Stewart of Purley in the late 1980s. Frances was given the identity card when she joined a Community Programme project in 1987. The government funded CP projects were intended to provide work and training for long term unemployed people. Unlike today's Employment Training Schemes, they paid workers the local rate for the job. Frances joined a project organised by the Croydon Design Initiative and the Croydon Tourism Project. As part of her job she illustrated and wrote parts of the Coulsdon, Kenley and South Norwood Architectural Trails. Producing the trails gave Frances the confidence to join the Enterprise Allowance Scheme the following year. The folder contained information about the scheme which allowed participants 40 a week for a year while they set up their own businesses. Frances became an author and spent the year writing her very successful book "Around Haunted Croydon".
